Do You Have Prediabetes?
1 in 3 American adults have prediabetes. Of those with prediabetes, more than 80% don’t know they have it.
What is prediabetes?
Prediabetes is a condition where blood glucose levels are slightly elevated. Having prediabetes puts you at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.
Prediabetes often goes unnoticed
You can have prediabetes for years without symptoms. This means you likely won’t know you have prediabetes until serious health problems show up. Talk to your doctor about getting your blood sugar tested if you have any of the risk factors for prediabetes, including:
- Excess body weight
- 45 years or older
- Having an immediate family member with type 2 diabetes
- Physically active fewer than 3 times a week
- Having had gestational diabetes
Race and ethnicity can also be factors. Hispanic/Latino Americans, African Americans, Pacific Islanders, American Indians, and some Asian Americans are at higher risk. source: CDC
